History: Having worked in a clothing factory since his youth, Jose decided to change his lifestyle and pursue a passion for coffee, inspired by his grandfather, who had worked on a coffee farm for many years. Eight years ago, Jose purchased his current property and started preparing a coffee nursery. That same year, he left his job to dedicate himself fully to the farm, which he now depend on entirely.
Initially, Jose produced conventional coffee, but it was not profitable due to low market prices. He struggled financially and even considered selling the farm. However, a friend and neighbor introduced him to specialty coffee and its potential for better sales. With the support and knowledge from the San Vicente mill, Jose began producing his first micro-lot of specialty coffee three years ago. Since then, his situation has improved significantly.
This is our Fourth year purchasing coffee from Jose Santos Gonzales. Jose lives on a beautiful plot of land on the Santa Barbara mountain which has boasted countless placings in Honduras' Cup of Excellence competitions. Jose's farm has several acres that overlook Lake Yojoa, one of the natural features that makes this mountain perfect for growing beautiful coffees as it helps stabilize temperatures throughout the day and year.
Currently Jose grows Pacas, Catimor, and just last year planted Geisha. Pacas, a natural mutation of the Bourbon varietal, is a staple on this mountain and produces rich and sweet coffees. This one in particular reminds us of Sour Patch Kids, Kiwi, & Honeydew Melon.
