Way up in the green highlands of Guji, there’s a little village called Sakicha where coffee is beyond the drink we know and love; it's part of the family story. The farmers here are part of the Gedeo and Oromo communities, speaking Gedeofa and Oromifa, and most of them work plots that are barely bigger than a soccer field. These small farms have been passed down through generations, and in a whole year, a family might only produce one to three bags of coffee.
Harvest time is all hands on deck. Moms, dads, grandparents, and kids. Everyone’s out picking and making sure only the ripest cherries get tossed into the basket. The local washing stations actually pay extra for this kind of care, because it means the coffee starts off at its absolute best.
From there, the cherries are floated and sorted, fermented at the washing station, and then spread out on raised beds to dry in the Guji sun. It’s slow, patient work, but that’s what lets all those vibrant, layered flavors shine through.
This coffee isn’t mass-produced. It’s grown, picked, and cared for by people whose lives are woven into every step, and when you drink it, you’re part of that story.
